Complete the daily tasks for an opportunity to get 100 gems daily. Also, join an alliance, this will give you 300 gems (this only works once). There are loads of other chances to get smaller amounts of gems just as you play through the game and complete random achievements.

You can get them from daily tasks, quests, achievements, and you can farm them
