You can merge equipment to increase it's grade, this will unlock new skills for the item and make it stronger. You can also collect designs for an item, when you have enough you can then upgrade it with the designs and gold coins.

If you want to change equipment later on, then you can salvage any upgraded equipment, returning it to level 1 and then you'll get the designs and coins back.

I just go day after day to get the free army crates and I just merge them into excellents
