Do you need both defense and attack boost on during zombie event ?

You don't need to have either on. The zombie invasion event will reward a little more if you manage to survive longer but the rewards are not large.

If you do want to use bonus items, I haven't tried it but i would assume that the defence bonus may help you as you are defending your city. The attack bonus I believe wont have any effect as you are not attacking.
