Will troops not in APC defend or not?

Will troops not in APC defend or not? If I sent all my APC to attack then he countered by sending his APC, will my reserves defend or not?

Any troops that you have that are not in a formation will defend the base after your formations fight. You sent the order that the formations (that are at home) will fight against attacks in the Garrison building. If the attacker defeats all the formations then they will have to fight the remaining troops.

there were no APC's in my city and the troops that were there did not help defend.
