Is it more important to have numbers when attacking / defending or the type of hero?

The hero is important as their skill will greatly improve the effectiveness of the troops attacks and also certain skills will increase the number of troops in the formation they are leading. More troops is good but you need the heroes to get the most troops in the APCs.
Always try to recruit the Orange heroes, and unlock and upgrade there skills where you can.
