What is hero XP and what is this utility?

Hero XP is used to increase the level of your heros. Go into the hero menu to view your recruited heros. Tap on any that you have and then tap the 'Level' icon in the top left. Here you can use the Hero XP items to level up.

The higher the level the more skills you can unlock.
