What are links to activate buffs?

What are links to activate buffs? In your troop window there are 3 stars in the right upper corner. When pushed it says link buff, then it says "deploy hero's with links to activate buffs". What is this? And how does it work??

Some time ago the game introduced linked heros, heroes that were supposed to compliment each other and when you placed them all in a single formation they activated some bonus effect. There do not seem to be many of these heroes though.
In the hero menu screen check each heroes individual screen for a 'link' icon on the top left under the Level icon. If you find one then tap the link icon to show the other heros that are needed, and the buffs that you will get.
