Where do I prefer effective range for a hero?

The range of a hero (or troops) is the range of their attacks during a battle. In a battle the armies line up against each other as in the formation. Top row at the front, then second row then third. If the range of an attack is small then they cannot hit troops towards the back of the enemy. You want your heroes and troops with the largest range to be at the back row and those with the shortest range at the front to make sure they can hit as many enemies as possible.
