How do I use my hero exp that I have in my inventory? Gives me no use option, does my hero have to be a certain level first?

Yes you can use the hero Exp to level up your heros. To do this go to the hero screen (Hero button on the right menu). Select any hero you want to upgrade and on their screen tap the 'Level' icon on the top left. Here you will see their current level and have the option to use any of your available Exp items to increase it.
