Is there any benefit whatsoever to expanding the size of your base by unlocking new area around your base? I see no point to it after a certain size.

No benefit. Once you have opened up all of the resource locations you will have enough space for everything. There are some decoration items and yo can of course spread out buildings and design your layout to use a larger area if you want but it is not necessary.
