The travelling merchant gives me four items at a time to purchase. I can't get to the next item without purchasing one of the four. This requires lots of diamonds. Is there any way to refuse a purchase and move onto the next item?

I would advise not to be trader. For your main base use farmer untill lvl 25 then switch to raider and use farms.
