Why did my protection cap increase although I didn't upgrade my base?

Why did my protection cap increase although I didn't upgrade my base? Can I increase it more; It went from 500 to 700 k.

This could be an effect of your alliance. Some allianace technologies give a bonus to rss protection levels. Check what research has been done and donate to the right research items to help raise it more.
