Your national strength is increased as your whole empire becomes more powerful. So this could be getting more consorts, viziers, heirs etc... But one way to increase your National Strength quickly and easily is to increase your Vizier's levels and Attributes (but using books).
If you select any Vizier, and make an upgrade to them, you will see also your national strength increase too.
