I know if a leader is inactive for 15 days the system will promote a new leader. Not sure what would happen if you just quit.

You can transfer your union to a deputy member. You can promote a member to the deputy status when he/she contributed 2000 silver coins. Otherwise you have to be absent for 15 days and the leader role will pass on one of your members.
