What troop type is best for defense?

What troop type is best for defense? When you look at statistics of archers, cavalry and footmen, footmen have most defense, but isn't it just resistance in battles? Or does it mean footmen are best for defending?
And then how does that work with counters, would defend well against cavalry(assuming heroes, tech everything else is even) even when cavalry is their counter?
We use cavaly the most for doing our missions at home. Cavaly is the fastest. It is best if you have farms and want to hit them for resources to use t1 or t2 cav. Also use t1 or t2 for gathering because they carry a bigger load. If you are taking tiles occupied by another alliance and it is close by use foot men. Archers are best for defending your castle
