What will be the best research to do for an newbie?

Any research you can do will help you at the start of the game. Try to spread out your research among the available sections. As you unlock more Legions make sure to research at least the first item in its research tree to let you add 1 hero.

As you progress though you will eventually unlock 'Zone commemoration' (and zone conflict). Try to make progress in zone commemoration as quickly as you can as this will help you earn more rewards in the Clash of Province event. The rewards will be very useful.

In my opinion, researching up to hero cooperations the best far and also town development. Hero cooperation enables you to have 2 hero’s in one legion, which will help out a lot in both attacking and defending. Town development gives more production rate for your resources, which then can help you upgrade (castles, barracks, archery range e. G....)I hope my comments help you.
