How to “kill marauders in town” for daily challenge points?

Click on the men inside your town and your dragon kills them

Why are they there what is the benefit to killing them they don’t seem to do anything

It only counts for the daily quest, when you get something (a few diamonds, food or wood) for killing them. I just haven't been able to figure out exactly when that is. Most of the time, you get nothing.
