Why does more troops mean more gathering time?

Why does more troops mean more gathering time? Isn't it more hands on deck, and so it should be shorter time required?
Also, when gathering speed bonuses are activated, then practically a unit is able to pick more resource than earlier. This should also shorten the gathering time.
All I see is that I am spending close to 16 and 18 hours in one round of gathering. Highly ridiculous.
The 2 limits on your gathering are how much can be taken from the resource tile and how much you can carry. As you increase the number of troops (and use cavalry to maximise the capacity) then the total amount that you can gather in 1 trip will increase which will increase the time you are there. Until you reach the limit of the resource tiles and then you will just take everything and return when it is empty.(some farmer bonuses will let you gather more than the amount listed though)
Using gather speed items will increase the rate at which you gather ans should decrease the time spent gathering. Not sure why you don't see this happening, check carefully what happens when you activate the bonus.
In general gathering is slow in the game. But it is a mostly risk free way to gain resources especially if you are offline for a while.
