There is no long term change. It is only a set back. If you are attacked until your base durability drops to zero then your castle / city will be automatically teleported to a new random location in the province. This will keep you from being repeatedly hit. The durability will then recover over time and you will be back to normal.

You will lose resources if they are taken during the attacks, but you will keep generating more. And troops will be wounded or possibly killed. Any wounded troops that end up in your medical tents can be healed.

Today, when I opened the game, my peace shield was activated on it's own. And I saw the notification that two guys attacked me. Was I zeroed? Was that the reason my peace shield activated on it's own?

If it was your first time being attacked, the game puts a shield on for you. After that you have to do it yourself.
