When I get defeated in battle it shows me my losses, kills, and defeat casualties. What does defeat casualties mean??

When you are attacked (and lose) you will suffer some losses from your pool of spare troops that are not in your legions.

I would like to agree but I disagree. I have been defeated in battle, and I lost troops in my legions.
My legions were not defending but still lost troops.
