When battles happen the 2 sides face each other in formation rows as you have them in the legion. The heroes in each row may have certain skills with a limited range.
Range 2 means it can reach 2 rows forward so if they will need to be in the front row to reach enemies. If a hero with a range 2 skill is in the back row then that skill will not be able to damage any enemies. Try to arrange your heroes so that longer range ones are in the back row.

The count starts at row in front of the heroes position. So if the skill has range 1 the hero needs to be in the front row and can only affect the first row of the enemy. If the Hero is in the back row the range needs to be 3 to reach the front of the enemy, and 5 to reach the back of the enemy.Guest Replied

There are 3 rows in each army which means there are 6 rows in total during a fight.[ Back | Middle | Front ] - [ Front | Middle | Back ]
If a hero in your own back row has a skill with range of 5 it can reach and affect all the way to the enemy back row. If it has a range of 3 it can only reach the front row of the enemy.
