What is the use of gold?

What is the use of gold? I have 15 millions of gold and I have nothing to spend it on.

Gold is used for many building upgrades, some research items, and will be needed when you unlock the Dragonite workshops and Crystal workshops. It is also used for enhancing troops. At certain points of the game, especially early on, you do not need a lot of it but save and stock as much as you can as you will need a lot of it in future.

I max out at 1 mil, how do you hold more??

You are not maxed out. It just takes a while for the total to change from 1 million to 1.1 million.
