How do use a peace shield in rise of empire?

If you don't have one to use yet then you can buy them from the alliance store for alliance points or from store for gems or simply by tapping your castle and selecting the Town buffs option. You can also earn some of the short term shields from event rewards.

Once you have one you can activate it from the Town buffs section in your castle building or from the items menu where the shields are stored.

I noticed the shield is turned on automatically after a defeat. How does that work?

Can a shield be programmed to activate the second the castle is under attack? One particular alliance members I try to attack seem to be able to do this. It is almost simultaneous when I click attack the shield is immediately activated.
