So I wanted to finish all the levels available to me so that I could sit back and go though the story at ease, but there seems to be a bug whereby I collected a the stars and now the story is not moving forward as the game is waiting for me to collect three stars.

There have been persistent bugs that plague the game and a lot of players do encounter the same problem. There isn't any viable solution to this other than to use coins to progress to the story.
