If you want to be highly effective in battle or at least want to hone your skills in gunfights, the best places for new players to start in the game are Salty Springs, Pleasant Park, and Retail Row. As these places are generally populated with lots of loot-hungry players which would generally make you accustomed with player confrontations in the game. Even if you happen to get killed easily and early in the matches, you should not let this deter you from learning a thing or two in actual player engagement in the game.

However, if you are not the aggressive type of player that can easily adapt to the shooting mechanics of the game, you can prioritize honing your defensive abilities instead. To give you the freedom to practice building fortifications like walls and make them effective in combat, you might want to start in small but still less populated areas like Anarchy Acres, Fatal Fields, or Tomato Town -- which have a decent number of loots for the usual headcount of players that start-off here.

We also have a guide (click here) towards investing your time in gathering resources and securing some legendary items for yourself along the way. For this strategy, you might want to start off in Wailing Woods or Moisty Mire since they have lush forests to easily fill you up with wood. Since these general regions are also not as popular as the other player infested areas, small quantities of available chests and loots should suffice.

A quick note though: even if these points of interests were suggested as good start-up locations in the game, you should always keep in mind that in order to win the match, a player should not only be good with defense, but with his or offense capability as well (and vice-versa).
