One annoying element for this sort of game is that the really important upgrades tend to have the longest timers associated with them.
You need to upgrade your HQ or another building in order to get the tactical upgrade you need to take out the enemy, but to do that you have to wait 3 hours? No problem!
Simply plan that particular upgrade so that it is the last thing you do before you log off of the game for the night!
That way the upgrade happens while you are sleeping or doing other things - you don't have to wait!
Even more significant is you end up spending your gold and/or resources so that you do not have a lot stockpiled before logging off - which makes your base a lot less tasty of a target to other players.
