II. Basic Base Construction
Boom Beach Guide
As the Tutorial begins the game runs us through a series of steps that are intended to both demonstrate the units and show us why they are necessary. The following elements quickly unfold:
First Lesson: Basic Base Construction and the Sniper TowerThe Build Icon appears in the bottom left corner of the game screen and appears as a blue circle with a hammer in it.
Tapping the Build Icon opens the Building Catalog - which is a major portion of the in-game store that is not associated with the RMT side of things.

The first structure that the game prompts you to build as part of the tutorial is a Sniper Tower - which will be the basic form of defense for your base throughout the body of the tutorial.
The Sniper Tower build icon appears as a wooden tower with a flat top - this is the most basic version of the Sniper Tower, which provides little more than a perch upon which a rifleman may lay or sit, and fire from.
Eventually as you level-up both your base/character and the tech tree, you will be able to improve the design and effectiveness of the tower - The listing defines the Sniper Tower by its effectiveness, which is a defensive shooting position with good range and damage.
The cost for this structure is 100 Wood, and it has a build timer of 3s, making it relatively easy to build and inexpensive.

If you look closely at the icon you will see in its right bottom corner the catalog displays additional information in the form of the building cap - which is a total of 1 Tower at the current tech tree and advancement level. That cap will change as you level up your base / character and the tech tree.
When you have actually constructed a tower (or towers) the focus of the in-game store changes to Upgrades over Builds, and the Tower Icon in the menu indicates any requirements for Upgrading it - for example it might say "Upgrade Headquarters to Level 4 to build more" which is your first indication that the tech level of certain key structures actually effects the other buildings and structures in the game.
