When the game opens you are presented with a basic position on the map - your base - which is equipped with three Level 1 buildings - a House, Headquarters, and Sawmill.

The Sawmill is the resource source that will allow us to begin building our base and expand our capabilities - but it will also serve as the primary limiting factor in that expansion, at least for now.

What you start out with is a very basic base as pictured here. What that works out to is three primary buildings - your HQ, Sawmill, and a single Level 1 Residence - plus your very crude naval facilities.

The basic foundation for advancement in the game is a combination of battles and resource management, which at first means acquiring sufficient Wood via the Sawmill and Victories as well as banking sufficient Gold to complete the first series of upgrades.

It will help to think of the upgrade process as generational - with the first gen being the Wood Generation, which is eventually followed by the Stone Generation, and the Iron Generation.

As is often the case with the really good games, the scheme used in Boom Beach doesn't presume that the player is an idiot, but makes certain basic assumptions about their abilities to read between the lines and so begins its focus on the capabilities of the units rather than resorting to a **** and Jane sort of approach. That's a good thing.
