In Research under Military 3, what is the "essentials" that can be upgrade, ie: Fighter essentials. Also in research, what are the formation upgrades used for?

Formation changes the order of the troop types during battle. Default is fighter formation, which puts fighters at the front. If you change to rider formation, then riders will be the first troops in the fight. This is useful when you specialize in a troop type other than fighters.
