Has anyone changed their troop type focus?

Has anyone changed their troop type focus? I want to change my secondary account from rider based to shooter based. My question is in regards to enhancement changes... if I unequip a stronger rider chip, for example, and use it to enhance a shooter one, will I lose all the promoters? Or will it promote the shooter chip to the level of the one I used?

Resources are returned and then you can upgrade the new chip using those resources
