If a hero add’s to your troop size do they have to be wiped or can they stay in your hero bag ?

Not sure what you mean by wiped? Hero skills that increase the troop size will be passive meaning that the hero just needs to be recruited and the skill unlocked for it to work, you don't need to add it to the attacking formation. You will want to enhance the hero as much as you can to increase the effect of the skill.
