Its a useful way to earn god if you care offline. You can set this off but selecting 2 ports to trade between, they need to be friendly ports.
Start at one and select another. Your ship will auto sail between then for a few hours and buy and sell items in each to make gold.
The more cargo space you have and the better you relations with the ports the more you can make.
