Axie Infinity Guide

Last Updated:

Axie Infinity is a play-to-earn game where players use a team of creatures called Axies in battling other players or clearing adventure stages. Players can earn SLP which can be converted to Ethereum, and finally, exchanged to real money should they wish to. In our Axie Parts and Ability Cards Guide, we will discuss the different Axie parts and how they affect an axie’s value and performance.

Axie Parts

Each axie has 6 body parts: eyes, ears, horns, mouth, back, and tail. All body parts (except the eyes and ears) dictate the axie’s ability card. The eye and ear parts have no ability cards attached to them but they can provide passive boosts. These parts or ability cards also determine an Axie’s price since top tier parts give the axie access to top-tier cards. For the complete list of cards, you can check out this link.

Each body part can also add bonus stats, depending on their class. While axies can equip parts from classes other than their own, it’s still highly recommended to equip parts belonging to their own class to gain a bonus to their ATK and DEF. Parts are permanent features of an axie. As of this writing, there's no way to detach and interchange parts

Class Part Bonus Stats
Plant +3 HP, +1 Morale
Aqua +3 SPD, +1 HP
Reptile +3 HP, + 1 SPD
Beast +3 Morale, +1 SPD
Bug +3 Morale, +1 HP
Bird +3 SPD, +1 Morale

Ability Cards

As described above, the four body parts (horn, back, tail, and mouth) will give an axie 1 ability card per part, which makes up an axie’s arsenal of four different ability cards. There are 22 different ability cards available per Axie Class; divided into the following:

* 6 Horns

* 6 Backs

* 6 Tails

* 4 Mouths

So how do these cards work? Each card has an Energy Cost. This is the required amount of energy needed to play them on the field. The cost will depend on the card’s effect; but usually, these cards cost 1 energy each. Next, using the image below as reference, we have the damage or attack value of the card. Take note that this is NOT the exact amount of damage the axie will inflict. This base value will be affected by other factors like combo bonuses, critical chance, the class weakness triangle, and more.

Some cards also have a Shield value. Once used, the shield will be applied immediately, regardless of the axie’s turn order. The amount of damage the shield can sustain will depend on the card used. If you have used multiple cards with shield value in a single turn, the axie’s shield will be the total of those cards’ shield values. The shield functions as an additional layer of health; the opponents’ damage will be applied to the shield first, after which it breaks, and any excess damage is applied to the HP.

Finally, you have to pay attention to the cards’ effects/ description. If you’re only using one axie team, it will pay to know their cards by heart. Doing so will make it easier for you to easily form strategies and combos on the fly. However, it’s also a good idea to take note of the common/most used cards that you may encounter in the Arena so you can plan accordingly.
