What you might actually have is just a fragment of that hero and not a complete copy of it. Usually, when you improve on a heroes' rank, you'll be spending those fragments of it -- which is why you usually do not find them. There is also no way to view which fragments you have unless you go to the hero upgrade window itself and try to rank up the pertaining hero.
