They are exactly what the name implies; they're used to increase the popularity of any particular news headline story that you wish to make more popular. Every story has the little flame icon where it has a numerical value. Higher the number, the more popular it is. Usually you use them when any story appears that involves you you your faction members. Like when one of ya'll reaches mansion level 25 or level 60 underboss or unlocks T4 associates

Well the above was the obvious and known what they are for. But what are the purpose for them besides bragging? Do we get extra rewards ? Is there a ranking for that player to get rewards? It seems these are useless.

Lol exactly. I know the first reply was trying to help but everyone knows what they do. Boosting popularity is known too, but like you asked, why?
What's the purpose of doing all that besides the "hey look at me".
Seems useless. I have over 1000 cards in inventory because I don't use them. No rss rewards? No family currency rewards? No rewards of any kind ???
