Punishing Gray Raven is a visually-stunning, action-packed ARPG set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by the Corrupted. The game has a gacha/lottery system which is the primary means of obtaining new characters to add to our teams. Since gachas are entirely luck-based, it’s comforting to know that PGR has a “pity” system which will award you with a guaranteed high-ranked unit or weapon after a certain number of pulls. In our Punishing Gray Raven Pity System guide, we will cover how the game’s Pity System works and how it can help you plan ahead when pulling for new constructs or characters.

As mentioned above, Punishing Gray Raven has a gacha system called Research. For those unfamiliar with the term, this is basically similar to lottery. You’ll have to spend certain currencies for a chance to “draw” or “pull” for a character or weapon. The actual item or character you’ll get is random. You can be very lucky and get a high-rank character/weapon, or exhaust your resources and still get nothing. Thankfully, the game has a pity system that guarantees you an A-rank or above for every X number of attempts. The currencies that will be used to draw will also differ from each banner.

Pity System Guide

To make it easier to understand, let’s get some examples. First, let’s take a look at the Base pool with the Beginner’s Exclusive Benefits. In this banner/pool, you’re normally guaranteed to get the following:

* Guaranteed A-rank or above Construct every 10 attempts

* Guaranteed S-rank construct every 60 attempts

Since this pool is intended for beginners, there’s a one-time offer of getting a guaranteed S-rank in the first 40 attempts. After triggering this pity guarantee or if you’re lucky enough to get an S-rank before reaching the 40 attempts threshold, the counter will reset and your guarantee will trigger on the normal 60 pulls.

Another thing that you have to remember is that your ongoing number of attempts is inherited or carried over between the same type of pools. For example, if the [Arrival Event Character Pool] has ended, your attempt counts will be carried over to the next [Arrival Event Character Pool].

Next, let’s take a look at the normal Weapon Research pool. Here, the pity guarantee is as follows:

* Guaranteed 5-star or above weapon every 10 attempts

* Guaranteed 6-star weapon every 30 attempts.

Pity System Guide

The Targeted Weapon Research pool has the same pity rates as the normal research pool above. However, in this focused research banner, you can select the set of weapons you prefer to get. Since this is a targeted weapon pool, if ever you get a 6-star weapon or trigger the 6-star guarantee, there’s a 80% chance of getting the 6-star weapon you’ve chosen in the set.

Finally, let’s take a look at the event pools. Currently, there’s a Guaranteed and Floating Guarantee type. The guaranteed event pool has the same pity rate as the base/standard guaranteed pool. The main difference is that if you ever get an s-rank character through normal attempts or guaranteed pity triggers, there’s a 70% chance of getting the featured rate-up character.

* Guaranteed A-rank or above Construct every 10 attempts

* Guaranteed S-rank construct every 60 attempts

Pity System Guide

The floating guarantee event pool can have the same rate-up character, with the same guaranteed A-rank or above construct for every 10 attempts. However, the base chance of getting an S-rank character is increased to 1.5%. In exchange for that base chance increase, the “floating guarantee” steps in. Your guaranteed S-rank pity will be placed between 80-100 attempts. So for example, if you got a value of 90, your guaranteed S-rank will trigger at 90 attempts. After receiving an S-rank character after reaching the pity guarantee or sheer luck, another random value will be generated. Like the guaranteed event pool, there’s a 70% chance of getting the featured rate-up character.

So between the two, which one is preferable? For most players, the Guaranteed Event pool makes more sense. This is due to their limited amount of pulls, especially for F2Ps and low spenders. However, for big spenders, the floating guarantee can be a better option since the increased base chance of getting S-rank constructs can be maximized with multiple pulls.

If you also noticed, there’s a lot of different cards or currencies used for each Research pool. It can be confusing where to get and how to manage these currencies so kindly check out our Currency Guide for more information about the different currencies in the game.
