How do you unlock the Trading Boat?

In order to unlock the trading boat so it visits the island you must first solve Puzzle #2: Fixing the Dock in Chapter 1. Once you have repaired the dock the trading boat will appear and you will be able to use resources to trade with other islands. To interact with the Trading Boat to trade you simply have to click on it.

I have clicked on the boat to trade, but I can't select the items to trade as I have multiples of them except 1 I have no ash. I don't want them to take them all . How do I do this?
