How do I get a crack? I've been waiting for a long while, but none have shown up. Am I missing something?

Whenever a crack opens the cat goes to, take a person and hold them over the crack. It will say they need a rope. Hold them over the crafting shack to pick up a rope. Rope is made with 2 vines. They may not get anything extra.
