How can you level up the Fishing Skill in Stardew Valley?

If you want to level up your Fishing skill, you can use your rod to catch fish, trash, seaweed, green algae or white algae since they all count. Harvesting from Crab Pots also grants you fishing experience even if you don't manually catch using that tool.

When starting out, you have access to your own pond at your farm in order to level up your skill. Once you reach fishing level 3, you can craft Crab Pots to help with maxing out your skill further. Improving your fishing skill improves your rod proficiency, it also increases the minimum fish size that you can catch, the bobber bar height, and it also decreases the max amount of time before a fish will bite.

Leveling up your fishing skill will help you out because you have a higher chance to catch quality fish such as silver or gold star ones. You will also be able to learn crafting and cooking recipes that can help you in fishing. Once you reach skill levels 5 and 10, you can unlock professions that focus on your skill.

Level 5 Fishing Professions in Stardew Valley

Your first profession can be chosen once you have reached skill level 5. Choosing an option will add a bonus to your game, and you won't be able to have the other option active. Here are the two options that you can get from reaching fishing level 5:

  • Fisher: Fish worth 25% more. This is helpful if you are trying to make more money if you focus on fishing.
  • Trapper: Resources to craft crab pots reduced. This may be useful if you don't have materials, but crab pots only need to be placed down once on a location, once you have enough crab pots, this profession won't be used much.

Level 10 Fishing Professions in Stardew Valley

Soon enough, you'll be able to max out your skill level to 10. From there, you can choose another profession that is based on your current one. You cannot choose a profession from another type from your skill level 5. Here is the available choices of professions at skill level 10:

Fisher Profession Choices:

  • Angler: Fish worth 50% more. This does not stack with the fisher profession but it replaces it. Meaning your fish will sell 50% more, not 25% more.
  • Pirate: Chance to find treasure doubled. This is useful if your goal is to get treasure, you can increase your chances by eating food that boosts luck, as well as fishing on a lucky day.

Trapper Profession Choices:

  • Mariner: Crab pots no longer produce junk items. This is useful since you won't have to worry about getting stuff that aren't water creatures.
  • Luremaster: Crab pots no longer require bait. This is useful if you don't like making or buying your own bait.

Which Fishing Profession should I choose in Stardew Valley?

As you can see, the fishing professions are focused either on the fishing side, or the trapping side. Both have their uses as well. If you are looking for ways to make money then having a Fisher and Angler profession will work well, or you can use the Pirate profession if your focus is to get treasure chests to find rare items.

The Trapper profession on the other hand will let you focus if you want to have consistent catches or if you want things more convenient by not using bait. There are some food recipes in the game that require crab pot fish, so choosing this profession line can help you out.

If you're able to get all treasures in the game as well as have enough money, perhaps you can just focus on trapping in order to give you more stock of ingredients. No matter what you do, you can have the option to change it according to your needs.

We hope that this page has helped you learn about the different professions that you can get from the Fishing skill. We have other pages as well about the game so please don't hesitate to check them out.
