Stardew Valley How to build a Silo

By Paul | Updated: Dec 2nd 2023

In Stardew Valley, the Silo is one of the several buildings that you can make your farm. It's a simple building that has a very good function though, and new players might not even think about building one when starting out. In this page, we'll be checking out what a Silo is and how to build it.

What are Silos used for?

Do you see all of that grass around your farm? You may be itching to cut it all down in order to clear the ground, however it does have a purpose aside from providing you with fiber as a material. Grass is needed in order for you to feed your animals!

Eventually, you'll start farming and place buildings such as coops which can house chickens for example. You can bring your animals outside so they can eat the grass.

However, once the winter season comes, your animals will feel too cold to even venture out on your farm. This is where Hay comes in! Hay is food that you can feed your animals during the winter season. You might notice that you can purchase Hay from Marnie, but you can actually harvest your own!

Once you have a Silo, the grass that you can cut can be automatically converted into Hay. If you want to build a Silo, head out to Robin's. You can follow the path on the north of your farm to go to her shop. Here are the materials that you need in order to create a Silo.

  • 100 Gold: You can sell your first crops, or perhaps sell fish that you can catch. Sell any items that can help you get your gold.
  • 100 Stone: Stone can be acquired by destroying rocks using your pickaxe. There's a lot of stone in your farm that you can use.
  • 10 Clay: When starting out on your farm, you can acquire Clay by tilling the soil with your hoe. Till as much as you can in order to get the clay that you will need. You might run out of energy, so make sure to eat some food.
  • 5 Copper Bar: You can create a Furnace and make copper bars using copper ores. An alternative way to get copper bars is purchasing the copper ores from the blacksmith, Clint.

Where should I put my Silo?

Once you have all materials needed, you can go to Robin's workshop and construct a building. Choose the Silo from her options and you will need to choose an area where you can place the Silo. Take note that you need to have some clear land, therefore having any plants, rocks, logs, etc. on the ground can prevent you from placing it.

Since the Silo is a tall building, it's advisable to place it on the top most area of your farm. You can even place it behind your house if you want. You always have the option to relocate your building through Robin.

Once you have a chosen spot, Robin will begin construction and you should be able to get the Silo soon.

If your Silo has been built, you can start cutting grass using your Scythe, and it will be automatically converted to hay. You can get the hay inside your animal buildings such as the coop or barn. You will then put the hay on the feeding tray so your animals can eat them.

What happens if I fill up my Silo?

The Silo has a maximum of 240 pieces in terms of inventory. Once this has been filled up, the grass that you cut won't be converted to hay anymore. If you are about to fill up your Silo, you always have the option to create another Silo that you can put in your farm. But, there's also another trick that you can do in order to save on space.

Silo Tip: If you only want to have a Silo on your farm, withdraw the Hay that you collect from your animal buildings and then place them on a chest. You can easily craft a chest which can store items. The chest can be placed outside of your animal buildings for easy access.

Once winter arrives, grass will not grow anymore. Since you start out your game in Spring, you have enough time to collect Hay. Grass can multiply if you leave it alone, so try to save up on some grass so you can keep on harvesting.

We hope that this guide has helped you learn on how to build your Silo in order to store Hay. There are a lot of things you can do as well in Stardew Valley, so please don't hesitate to check our other pages!
