What happens when you 'help' your alliance members? Or when you ask for help and they help you?

Every help that you do will reduce the time of the activity, So if they are building then the time remaining will be reduced.
It should reduce the time by 1% or a minimum of 1 minute for each help.
There is alliance technology research that will improve the effect of the help to reduce even more time.
