These manuals will upgrade a hero. All depends on what color the manuals are though, and then pick a hero that is the same color as the manual and if you have enough you can use the manuals to upgrade them.

Click the heroes tab at the bottom of the game screen to check for upgrades.

I have crap tons of these manuals and can't use them or can't figure out how to use them to do anything. When I click use it takes me to the heros tab and when I click on one that matches it doesn't do anything at all but pull up their stats like normal. There is no information on how many you need or what button or where to click to apply it.
