By Paul | Updated: Dec 17th 2023

In Stardew Valley, you need to have some upgrades for your tools. In order to do that, you'll need to smelt ores to convert them into bars. This process requires Coal. This resource is not only used for smelting, but it's also needed for crafting, certain quests, or even used as gifts. In this page, we'll be checking out the different ways for you to acquire Coal.

What are the ways to get Coal?

Coal is a combustible rock that has many uses. This resource can actually be acquired through a lot of different methods if you know where to look. You might think that it's available in the mines or the blacksmith if you were to take a guess, and you're right!

Knowing which specific resources for Coal can be useful if you need it. After all, there's a lot of items that require coal such as tool upgrades or smelting. Coal is even needed in order for you to complete the community center. Here's the list of different ways that you can acquire coal in Stardew Valley:

  • Purchase from the blacksmith: You can purchase coal from the blacksmith for 150 Gold on year on, and 250 gold on the years after. You can also buy 10 wood from Robin and use a charcoal kiln if you want during year 1.
  • Craft the Charcoal Kiln: One of the useful items you can craft in the game is the Charcoal Kiln. Using this item, you can convert 10 pieces of wood in order for you to get coal. This is handy to have if you have a lot of wood supply, so craft multiple pieces of Kilns to use.
  • Mine Rocks: Rocks can be mined using the pickaxe, and there's a lot of them scattered on your map at the start of the game. You can also have access to the mines, or perhaps the quarry for more rocks.
  • Check other things at the Mines: Aside from using your pickaxe at rocks, there are other things at the mine that you can check for coal. Inspect minecarts and miner's bags, kill dust sprites, red slimes, purple slimes, black slimes, stone golems (wilderness golems can appear on your farm if you have that option), metal heads, shadow brutes, and shadow shamans. These have chances for providing you with Coal
  • Break open Geodes: There's a chance for coal to be acquired from cracking geodes open from the Blacksmith.
  • Dig up artifact spots: There can be times where you'll find worms wriggling on the ground, especially during Winter. Use your hoe to dig this artifact spot, and there's a chance for coal to drop.
  • Do some panning: You can use a copper pan on shimmering spots in water and try to get some items. Coal is one of the possible drops.
  • Check the Travelling Cart: The traveling cart has a merchant that sells wares every Friday and Sunday up to 8 pm. There can be times that coal is sold there.
  • Wait for Trains: If you happen to find the train passing by, there's a chance for coal to be dropped from one of its carts.
  • Harvest fruit trees struck by lightning: If you have trees on your farm that are growing fruit, there is a chance that the fruit can be turned into coal if it's struck by lightning.

There's a lot of choices for you in order to get coal. The cheapest way would be for you to chop your own wood and place them on the charcoal kiln. However, purchasing coal from the blacksmith is convenient and it's readily available. Soon enough, you should be able to have enough money to purchase them easily.
