When loading my Caravel (ship) with resources for ship and navigation moves, it shows the 'total' type of resources I have collected per move. So how do you know if say 9 navigation moves will cost the total (eg, 117 iron) resource or if it is less than this? Surely it must be less and not using your total stash for one sea-trip?

It's just one. One stone will give you 4 nav turns. One iron will give you 6. One bread will give you 4 moves; one egg will give you six.
