How long is a "long chain" of carrots or pigs? Trying to unlock eggplant and the 1 after pig but stuck on 0%

Usually a 'long' chain is whatever it takes to get the bonus animal/plant - the 'long' chain can vary in number but will show a star when you have made it. Hold down the first carrot/pig and you can see what number you need for a long chain.

It seems 8 is the minimum for a long chain even if 5 or 6 is all that's needed for the star to appear. I've noticed that collecting hens to get pigs. I was at 38% for pigs and collecting 5 hens left me at 38%. But collecting 8 moved me to 39%. 0 0 REPORT
(I'm playing the Windows version with no movies or servers to connect to friends so my progress will probably get stopped in the near future.)
