2. Be your Own NSA

Prior to jumping right into battle, before you sail into the restricted orbit of the next planet a better idea is to give it a quick once-over first.

You can do that by tapping on the Info button on the bottom of the screen - a button that will reveal all sorts of useful information about the battle you may be facing such as whether there is an enemy ship present and, if so, what their capabilities are, what sort of weapons they mount, and etc.

Of course if the planet happens to have a glowing blue back-light you don't need that report to tell you trouble is ahead - the glowing blue planets are the ones that feature Boss Battles!
