Why can’t I get 2 next level Gaia statues when merging 5?

Why can’t I get 2 next level Gaia statues when merging 5? What is the technique what am I doing wrong? I can do it for other items, make a square then out the 5th one in the middle. But every single time I try with the statues it messes up and just does one
