The main way to get nails is to fill the special orders in the cart near the entrance. You may need to fill a few orders before getting a special orders. If the orders are too difficult, simply delete them, they'll be replaced by something else in a short while. As you progress in the game you'll be deleting a lot of orders (delete anything requiring nails or pipes!). The order board is also the main way to make money, especially after you unlock the Industrial Research Institute, which allows you to raise the prices.

Hammers are also sometimes found in the chest that pops up, and items that give treasure chests (from the events, if you get to the end), and occasionally rewards from quests.
