I knocked over the tree and crossed the river but now I can't do anything on the other side. I get a message "you can't move forward until you finish the task". What do I need to do now?

You will have a task that has not been finished yet. Try returning to the home map and see what you need to unlock. The beaver will need a pond unlocked.
