In Arena mode, why are the results so random?

In Arena mode, why are the results so random? I can battle a player with a cumulative point total 50,000 points lower than mine and lose by 8 points, or beat a player who is at my level but only win 1 point, or sometimes win by 18 points. What factors should i be looking at to identify a good opponent to battle ?
